Common Witch-hazel unlike other native trees flowers primarily in late summer and autumn.   Its spidery yellow flowers are fragrant.   In open mountainous areas of West Virginia, Common Witch-hazel trees may form groups of weather stunted trees called "orchards."   Wind and wind-blown ice crystals from the west gives these trees characteristic shapes.
