On 19 April 2005, I was pleased to join Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman’s class (Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Supplements PBIO-530) and Mr. Russ Watts for a plant-adventure walk in Glover Archbold Park, Washington, D.C., a highlight of spring 2005 for me.
We enjoyed hot (about 80° F), still, sunny weather.
Some plants in full bloom were
Claytonia virginica (Spring Beauty, Portulacaceae)
Dentaria laciniata (Cut-leaved Toothwort, Brassicaceae)
Ranunculus ficaria (Lesser Celandine, Ranunculaceae, a highly problematic alien plant)
Taraxacum officinale (Dandelion, Asteraceae, alien species)
Viola sororia (Common Blue Violet = Meadow Violet = old name: Viola papilionacea, Violaceae)
Dr. Fugh-Berman told us about medicinal uses of many of the plants that I identified.
