This is a list of 131 ant species that may be found in the Washington, D.C., Area. This list is adapted from the species lists in An annotated checklist and key to the species of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of the Chesapeake Bay Region (Lynch 1987), The Catalog of Hymenoptera in America North of Mexico (CHANM)(Krombein et. al. 1979), and Abundance, diversity, and activity of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in oak-dominated mixed Appalachian forest treated with microbial pesticides (Wang et. al. 2000).

a = Found by various methods by James F. Lynch at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), Maryland, along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

b = Found using pitfall trapping by Edd Barrows and Dan Kjar in the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve (DMWP). All of the 'b'-labeled specimens may be seen by following this link.

c = Found using pitfall trapping by Wang et. al. (2000) in the George Washington National Forest (Augusta County, VA, USA) and Monongahela National Forest (Pocahontas County, WV, USA).
