On 25 June 2008, I had the privilege of addressing the Georgetown University Alumni Club of Japan and guests from Harvard, Notre Dame, and Yale Alumni Clubs of Japan, Temple University, Shinsei Bank, and other organizations. I talked about the GU Center for the Environment, GU Science enhancement, the new GU science building, and my lab’s research on arthropod biodiversity at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, VA. Then the group watched the conservation film On the Edge: The Potomac River, Dyke Marsh (2006, directed by David Eckert). Club President Kennedy Gitchel commented on how the film represented other nature preserves, entire countries such as Japan, and, in fact, our entire Earth. Above are photographs of some of the attendees. I thank Ms. Joan Rodgers Doi for the photo of me at the podium and all concerned for their hospitality.

Additional Information:

On 23 June 2008, I had the privilege of addressing students, staff, and professors at Shinshu University, Matsumoto, Japan. I talked about the GU Center for the Environment and my lab’s research on arthropod biodiversity at Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve. Then I showed the group the conservation film On the Edge: The Potomac River, Dyke Marsh (2006, directed by David Eckert). Professor Fujiyama kindly hosted me and translated my answers to questions during my presentation. One professor commented on the great value of nature-preserve watchdog groups, such as Friends of Dyke Marsh, and the need for such groups in Japan. Above are photographs of Professor Shizuo Fujiyama, past and present Shinshu University graduate students, and myself. I thank Professor Fujiyama for some of the photos and all for their hospitality.
