Figure 1.   The opening of a nest of Piliated Woodpeckers.   The Woodpeckers excavate a nest in dead tree, and do not use the same nest for more than 1 season.   Other organisms, including Wood Ducks, nest in abandoned nests of these Woodpeckers.
