Figure 4.   A trunk of Silver Maple in the swamp forest along the Potomac River, 13 April 2001.   This tree might be leaning because a flood bent it over when it was younger.   Many other trees (Ash-leaved Maples (= Boxelders), Eastern Sycamores, and Silver Maples) leaned in the area as well.

Figure 5.   Bark of a Silver Maple, Bethesda, Maryland, 26 March 2001.   The owners of this tree removed it in July 2001 although it was healthy and shapely.
