Additional Information:   This Jack-in-the-pulpit, a native species, is surrounded by three species of alien invasive plants that are greatly altering its habitat.   Within the leafy spathe is a group of small flowers.   Plants of this species can be female in that they have only female flowers within their spathes; male, only male flowers; or more rarely hermaphroditic with both female and male flowers.   Plants in better locations tend to be large and female.   Plants in less favorable locations tend to be smaller and male.
