Symplocarpos foetidus (Skunk Cabbage, Araceae).
On 13 March 2005, I decided to visit the
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, about 10 miles north of Washington, D.C.
to look for flowers of Symplocarpos foetidus (Skunk Cabbage, Araceae) and other life of late winter.
It was a still, cool day of about 50° F, and I welcomed periods of direct sun.
I found Symplocarpos foetidus growing in and along a stream of about 12 inches wide in many areas.
Some of the tops of spathes and some leaves were frost burned.
The Potomac River was blue-green and at a medium level.
