Additional Information:   Another common name for this species is Black Moss.  It is not a true moss, but a member of the Pineapple Family (Bromeliaceae).  This species is native to eastern Virginia through Florida, Texas, and Central and South America (Fernald 1950, Brickell and Zuk 1996).  This bromeliad has small yellow-green, or blue, flowers in April through November.
